Why Discipline Equals Freedom ?


The phrase "Discipline equals freedom" has sparked my curiosity, stirring up questions about its validity and the intricate relationship between discipline and freedom.


During my younger years, I learned the value of discipline and fully embraced it. Juggling work, studies, and household responsibilities demanded unwavering discipline. However, over time, I realized that sticking strictly to schedules made me inflexible and left me feeling frustrated and disappointed when things didn't go as planned. In my quest for control, I unknowingly burdened myself with immense pressure, resulting in an ever-growing to-do list and persistent worries. This mindset not only took a toll on my mental well-being but also strained my relationships, as others perceived me as demanding. Anxiety and depression became recurring companions, like an unwelcome flu.


To break free from this cycle, I began to learn a new skill: the art of not being overly disciplined. I decided to ditch my watch and let my weekends to unfold naturally, without rigid schedules. If I didn’t attend to housework for a week, I allowed myself to postpone it to the next.


While this newfound freedom initially felt liberating, it also created a sense of chaos. With a myriad of tasks clamouring for attention, I found myself unsure of where to start, leading to constant feeling of unproductivity. The laundry piled up, and dust seemed to settle everywhere, leaving me to question whether I could live in such a disorganized state indefinitely.


Let’s exploring the delicate relationship between the two, find a path that leads to both structure and flexibility, discipline and freedom.



Understanding Discipline

Discipline - the art of training ourselves to adhere to certain standards and codes of conduct. It's all about setting limits, establishing routines, and actively working towards achieving our goals or getting stuff done.


From our early encounters with school rules and deadlines, discipline has been ingrained in us through external regulations. As adults, we have the freedom to pursue our own goals and objectives, requiring self-discipline. It empowers us to set targets, prioritize tasks, and manage our time effectively.


In essence, discipline is about self-control and the ability to focus on tasks despite distractions or procrastination.



Exploring Freedom

Freedom - The capacity to make choices and act upon them without restriction. It grants us the ability to speak our minds, experiment with different ideas, and pursuit happiness in our unique way.


While freedom is essential, it's equally important to exercise it responsibly, considering the well-being of others. By cherishing and nurturing our freedom, we can create a more equitable and improved world for everyone.



The Relationship between Discipline and Freedom

Mahatma Gandhi recognized the strong relationship between freedom and discipline. He believed that discipline is essential for achieving our goals, even if it means sacrificing some of our free time.


According to him, without self-discipline, it is impossible to achieve anything significant in life. Gandhi considered discipline and freedom as two sides of the same coin.

He asserted that discipline leads to greater freedom by forming good habits and making tasks easier. Working diligently and with discipline is, in fact, a true expression of freedom. Practicing self-discipline gradually enhances our personal freedom and shapes our self-perception. The reality is that chaos ensues when freedom lacks discipline, while boredom and stagnation follow when discipline lacks freedom.

It's perfectly okay to be flexible! Adjusting your standards and commitments as you navigate different seasons and circumstances in life. Flexibility is the key, my friend.


Remember discipline and freedom can peacefully coexist. They actually work hand in hand to bring richness and fulfilment to our lives. Keep in mind that developing discipline is a gradual process. It requires consistent effort and patience. Celebrate even the smallest victories along the way and keep your eyes on the prize—the freedom and fulfilment that discipline brings.
